About Us

North American Shar-Pei Rescue (NASPR) is a breed specific rescue dedicated to the Chinese Shar-Pei.

Established in October 2000, NASPR has taken in over 2,143 Shar Pei in need of rescue.  NASPR is committed to the rescue and placement in permanent homes, of as many abandoned and/or abused purebred  Chinese Shar-Pei as possible. In doing so however, it must be understood that NASPR is a rescue, not a sanctuary.  NASPR understands that we, nor any other rescue group can save them all.  To ensure that we do not allow the lines to blur between rescue and sanctuary and that decisions are not made solely with the heart, NASPR has develop and adheres to guidelines, policies and procedures for the operation of our organization.  Rescue involves making hard choices at times, and NASPR reserves the right to evaluate cases with extenuating circumstances on an individual basis.

NASPR believes that Rescue should be reserved for those last chance dogs that, after evaluation, are deemed to be adoptable.  Therefore, although we do understand that life can create situations that place owners in a position to have to surrender their Shar-Pei, applications for owner surrenders will be evaluated and prioritized based on our available space.

NASPR believes that education is the key element in the fight to reducing the number of animals in need of rescue.  Through education NASPR hopes to provide knowledge and support to perspective adopters, pet owners and individuals in regards to health, training, and the importance and benefits of spaying and neutering.  Through education and public awareness  it is NASPR’s goal to do their part to dispel the misconception that dogs and other pets are disposable items.
